Hesse-Cassel is the English language version of Hessen-Kassel. The old German written form of the city name Kassel, used until 1926, is also Cassel. Hesse-Cassel (used till 1803) and Kurhessen (used from 1803 to 1866) are the names of the former state in central Germany with the capital Kassel (not only the name of a town).
Additionally, from 1807 to 1813 Kassel was the capital
of the Napoleonic Kingdom of Westphalia (Königreich Westfalen = Le
Roi de Westphalie). Since 1866 Kurhessen and the Duchy Nassau are occupied
by Prussia and made a subprovince in Prussia named Hessen-Nassau.
In 1871 the German empire (Deutsches Kaiserreich) under Prussian power was
established.
In 1945 the modern federal State Hessen was established mainly from former
Hessen-Kassel and Hessen-Darmstadt with parts of Nassau and the principality
Waldeck (Fuerstentum Waldeck).
Today the proper name of the village is Sterkelshausen, Gemeinde Alheim (administrative community), Landkreis Hersfeld-Rotenburg (county) in Hessen. The main database used is HESAUS (HESsische AUSwanderer = Hesse emigrants), provided by the Staatsarchiv Marburg (Hesse State Archives in Marburg) and the church archives of Sterkelshausen other sources will be added.
